The Department of Thermophysics was organized on January 1, 1966 as a base department of Heat and Mass Transfer Institute (IHMT) of the Academy of Sciences of the BSSR on the initiative of IHMT Director, Academician A. V. Lykov, and Rector of the Belarusian State University, Academician A. N. Sevchenko.
In connection with the beginning of specialist training on energy efficiency and energy conservation, the Department of Thermophysics was renamed into the Energy Physics Department by the order of Belarusian State University Rector on April 3, 1998.
On May 30, 2011, within the framework of research laboratory reorganization at the Faculty of Physics, the Laboratory of Energy-Efficient Materials and Technologies was opened at the department.
On June 28, 2018, “Thin-film technologies” student research laboratory was created jointly with IZOVAC company.
The Department was headed by:
|Alexey V. Lykov
Head of the Department from 1966 to 1974.
Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the BSSR and the Academy of Construction and Architecture of the USSR.
Laureate of the USSR State Prize, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of the RSFSR, awarded with the Order of Lenin, the Red Banner of Labor Order, and the Badge of Honor Order.
One of the founders of the Belarusian school of Thermophysics. He discovered a new phenomenon of moisture thermal diffusion in capillary-porous bodies (the Lykov effect). In honor of A. V. Lykov, one of the thermodynamic similarity criteria was named – the Lykov number.
At his initiative, the international “Journal of Engineering Physics and Thermophysics” was organized.
The name of A. V. Lykov was given to the Institute of Heat and Mass Transfer of NAS of Belarus. The International Center for Heat and Mass Transfer (ICHMT) grants the A. V. Lykov Medal. The NAS of Belarus awards the Academician A. V. Lykov Prize.
